Self-discipline quotes are everywhere: on gym walls, phone lock screens and a thousand social posts. Most lists copy each other, and many of the most famous lines were never said by the people they are credited to.

This list is different in two ways. First, every quote has a source, and where a famous line is misattributed, we say so. Second, at the end you will find how to turn one quote into a daily habit, because a quote you only read is a poster, and a quote you act on is a tool.

What self-discipline really is

Before the quotes, one surprising finding. You might expect disciplined people to resist temptation all day. In an experience-sampling study, people high in self-control actually reported fewer temptations and less inner conflict in daily life (Hofmann et al., 2012). Later work found that self-controlled people succeed largely because they have built good habits, which makes the right choice automatic (Galla & Duckworth, 2015).

So self-discipline is less about gritting your teeth and more about arranging your life so the right thing is the easy thing. It matters: in a study following 1,000 children to age 32, childhood self-control predicted adult health, wealth and staying out of trouble with the law (Moffitt et al., 2011), and in teenagers, self-discipline predicted school grades better than IQ (Duckworth & Seligman, 2005). The good news: it can be built.

Ancient self-discipline quotes (with sources)

  2. "You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength." Often credited to Marcus Aurelius. It is a modern paraphrase of ideas in the Meditations, not a direct line from it.

  4. "Though one should conquer a million men in battle, yet he indeed is the noblest victor who has conquered himself." The Dhammapada, verse 103 (Buddharakkhita translation).
  5. "A journey of a thousand miles begins beneath one's feet." Laozi, Tao Te Ching, chapter 64. (Usually quoted as "begins with a single step".)

  8. "The strong person is not the one who overcomes others by strength, but the one who controls himself when angry." The Prophet Muhammad, hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari 6114 and Sahih Muslim 2609.
  9. "We become just by doing just acts, temperate by doing temperate acts, brave by doing brave acts." Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics, Book II.1 (W. D. Ross translation).
  10. "To conquer oneself is the first and best of all victories." Plato, Laws, Book I (626e), paraphrased in many translations.
  11. "No man is free who is not master of himself." Attributed to Epictetus (from the Fragments); the wording varies by translation.
  12. "First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do." Epictetus, Discourses, Book III.23.

Modern self-discipline quotes

  1. "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." Will Durant, The Story of Philosophy (1926), summarising Aristotle. Often wrongly credited to Aristotle himself.

  3. "Discipline equals freedom." Jocko Willink, the title of his 2017 book.
  4. "Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment." Commonly attributed to Jim Rohn, the American speaker; we could not find the original talk or book.
  5. "Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most." Origin unclear. Widely credited to Abraham Lincoln, but there is no record he said it. Researchers have traced versions from the 2000s credited to others or to "unknown" (Barry Popik's research).
  6. "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms, to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning (1946).
  7. "Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going." Commonly attributed to Jim Ryun, the American runner; the original source is unclear.

How to turn a quote into a habit

Reading a quote does almost nothing. Linking it to an action does a lot. Research on "if-then" plans, called implementation intentions, found a medium-to-large effect on reaching goals across 94 studies (Gollwitzer & Sheeran, 2006).

  1. Pick one quote. Only one, for 30 days.
  2. Write it where the action happens: on the fridge, the desk, the gym bag, the lock screen.
  3. Attach an if-then plan: "If I read this line in the morning, then I do my first task before checking messages."
  4. Tick a box every day you act on it. Not every day you read it.

For the full method, read how to be more disciplined and how to be consistent, or start the 30-day discipline challenge.

A task for tonight

Choose the quote that hit hardest. Write it by hand on a small card and put it where you will see it first thing tomorrow. Under it, write the one action it will remind you to do.

If you want daily tasks, a streak that means something and people walking beside you: request to join.

Walking beside you,

The Chief

Questions

What is the best quote about self-discipline?

Many people choose Will Durant's summary of Aristotle: 'We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.' It captures the core idea that discipline is built through small, repeated actions rather than single heroic efforts.

Did Aristotle say 'We are what we repeatedly do'?

Not in those words. The line comes from Will Durant's book The Story of Philosophy (1926), where he summarises Aristotle's ideas in the Nicomachean Ethics. Aristotle's own point is that we become just by doing just acts and brave by doing brave acts.

Did Abraham Lincoln say 'Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most'?

There is no known record of Lincoln saying it. Quote researchers have found versions from the 2000s credited to other people or to 'unknown', and the Lincoln credit appears later on social media.

Do motivational quotes actually help with discipline?

A quote on its own changes little. It helps when you link it to one specific action, such as reading your chosen line every morning before your first task, so that it becomes a cue for a habit.

What is self-discipline in simple words?

Self-discipline is the ability to do what you decided to do, even when you do not feel like it, and to say no to what pulls you away from it. In practice it relies more on good habits and fewer temptations than on willpower.
