Most advice about routines is about mornings. But a good morning is mostly decided the night before: by when you go to sleep, what you did in the last hour, and whether your mind was still racing when the lights went out.

An evening routine is a gentle runway into sleep. It does not need to be long or perfect. It needs to be repeatable.

Why your evening matters

So a good evening routine does three things: closes the day, empties the mind, and dims the world.

The 6 building blocks of a night routine

1. A shutdown moment

Pick a time when work ends. Close the laptop, write down where you left off, and say (out loud if it helps) "done for today". This tells your brain the day has a border.

2. A 10-minute reset

Tidy one area, wash the last dishes, put out tomorrow's clothes and bag. Waking up to order is a gift to your future self.

3. Tomorrow's list

Write the three most important things for tomorrow, plus anything that is buzzing in your head. Once it is on paper, you do not need to hold it in your mind.

4. Screens down, lights low

Set a "screens off" time 30 to 60 minutes before bed. Dim the lights. Charge your phone outside the bedroom, or at least out of reach, and use a simple alarm clock.

5. Something calm

Read a paper book, stretch gently, take a warm shower, pray or meditate, listen to quiet music, or talk with someone you live with. Pick what genuinely relaxes you.

6. A regular bedtime

Going to bed and getting up at roughly the same time every day, including weekends, is one of the simplest things you can do for sleep.

Small routines are easier with people beside you. If you want daily tasks and a tribe that checks in: request to join.

Things that quietly wreck evenings

Evening routine + morning routine

The two work as a pair. Your evening sets up your morning; your morning sets the tone for the day. Read our morning routine guide, or build one in a minute with the free morning routine builder.

If you regularly struggle to sleep for weeks, snore loudly, wake up gasping, or feel exhausted however long you sleep, please talk to a doctor. These can be signs of a sleep disorder that needs proper care. This article is general wellbeing information, not medical advice.

A task for tonight

Set one alarm on your phone called "Wind down", 30 minutes before the time you want to be asleep. When it rings tonight, do just two things: put the phone on charge outside your bedroom, and write tomorrow's top three. That is your routine for this week.

If you would like a daily task, a streak and a tribe to keep you honest: request to join.

Walking beside you,

The Chief

Questions

What is a good evening routine?

A good evening routine winds you down over the last 30 to 90 minutes of the day: finishing work, a short tidy, preparing for tomorrow, writing tomorrow's to-do list, dimming lights and screens, something calm like reading, and going to bed at a regular time.

What time should my night routine start?

Count back from the time you need to wake up. Most adults need 7 or more hours of sleep, so if you wake at 6:30, aim to be in bed by about 23:00 at the latest and start winding down 30 to 60 minutes before that.

Should I stop using my phone before bed?

It helps many people. In a lab study, reading on a light-emitting e-reader before bed made people take longer to fall asleep and feel less alert the next morning than reading a printed book. Aim for 30 to 60 minutes without screens, or at least dim them and keep the phone out of the bed.

Does writing a to-do list before bed help sleep?

In one sleep-lab study, people who spent five minutes writing a specific to-do list for the coming days fell asleep faster than people who wrote about tasks they had already completed.

How do I stick to an evening routine?

Keep it short, start with only two or three steps, attach it to something you already do every night such as brushing your teeth, and set a phone-free alarm that tells you when to start winding down.
